{"id":2625,"date":"2023-03-10T15:06:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T18:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/beneficios-das-entradas-indiretas-de-cabos-em-equipamentos-metalicos-do-tipo-a-prova-de-explosao-parte-1-3\/"},"modified":"2023-06-09T09:29:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-09T12:29:42","slug":"advantages-of-indirect-cable-entry-in-explosion-proof-metallic-equipment-part-1-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/en\/advantages-of-indirect-cable-entry-in-explosion-proof-metallic-equipment-part-1-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Advantages of Indirect Cable Entry in Explosion Proof Metallic Equipment &#8211; Part 1\/3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Indirect<\/em><\/strong><em> cable entries into &#8220;Ex&#8221; metal enclosures with &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; (Ex &#8220;db&#8221;) types of protection with &#8220;increased safety&#8221; (Ex &#8220;eb&#8221;) junction boxes, with <strong>combined Ex &#8220;db eb IIC Gb&#8221;<\/strong> protections provide, among others, the <strong>benefits<\/strong> of increased &#8220;Ex&#8221; field service <strong>facilities<\/strong> for the assembly, inspection and maintenance activities of <strong>automation, telecommunication and electrical<\/strong> equipment and installations in classified areas containing <strong>flammable gases<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In all &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; (Ex &#8220;d&#8221;) metal enclosures with internal <strong>sparking<\/strong> components or devices (which need to be protected by external enclosures because of the possibility of causing an explosion in an explosive atmosphere), the cables of the &#8220;external&#8221; power or control circuits must &#8220;enter&#8221; or &#8220;step into&#8221; the interior of the enclosures in order to be connected to the terminals of the respective devices. Examples of <strong>sparking <\/strong>devices or components that are installed inside Ex &#8220;d&#8221; enclosures are: circuit breakers, power switches, control switches, control buttons, contactors and relays.<\/p>\n<p>There are basically <strong>two ways and techniques of manufacturing<\/strong> Ex equipment that <strong>users<\/strong> or <strong>owners<\/strong> of Ex equipment and installations can indicate in their typical Ex design details or specify in their documents or drawings for the purchasing processes, in order to allow these cable &#8220;entries&#8221; to be made the inside of Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong><strong>NDIRECT<\/strong> mode: <strong>NO<\/strong> need to open the lids of the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures<\/li>\n<li><strong>DIRECT<\/strong> mode: <strong>WITH<\/strong> the need to open the lids of the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In cases of <strong>indirect <\/strong>cable entries, cables from external power, control or automation circuits are connected to terminal boxes of the <strong><em>&#8220;increased safety&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> type (Ex &#8220;e&#8221;), without needing to open the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures.<\/p>\n<p>In cases of <strong>direct<\/strong> cable entrance, the cables of external power, control or automation circuits enter <strong>directly<\/strong> into the interior of the enclosures through <strong>Ex &#8220;d&#8221; cable glands<\/strong> (in cases of wiring systems through tray or conduit) or through <strong>Ex &#8220;d&#8221; sealing units<\/strong> (in cases of wiring systems through conduits). In these cases of <strong>direct<\/strong> entries, it is necessary <strong>to remove<\/strong> the covers to allow the fixation of the cable conductors to the terminals of the respective devices inside the enclosures and later replacing the respective covers (<strong>threaded<\/strong> covers or <strong>flanged<\/strong> covers fixed by means of <strong>screws<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>In the illustration below are shown examples of installation of metal enclosures of the &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; type (Ex &#8220;d&#8221;),containing <strong>sparking<\/strong> devices, such as circuit breakers, contactors, relays, or fuses, with cable entry in an <strong>INDIREC<\/strong><strong>T<\/strong> and <strong>DIRECT<\/strong> mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2550 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"891\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_1.png 739w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_1-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_1-600x292.png 600w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_1-64x31.png 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Examples of setting up &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; (Ex &#8220;d&#8221;) type <strong>metallic<\/strong> enclosures including <strong>sparking<\/strong>, with <strong>INDIRECT<\/strong> cable entry into the interior of the &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; <strong>metallic<\/strong> enclosure by means of <strong>Ex &#8220;eb&#8221; terminal box external to the enclosure<\/strong> and <strong>DIRECT<\/strong> cable entry into the interior of the <em>&#8220;explosion-proof&#8221;<\/em> metallic enclosure by means of <strong>Ex &#8220;d&#8221; sealing units<\/strong> for conduits and by <strong>Ex &#8220;d&#8221; cable glands<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<p>For eventual installation requirements of &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; type <strong>metal enclosure<\/strong>s which require the internal mounting of <strong>sparking<\/strong> components such as switches, contactors or circuit breakers with nominal current above <strong>250 A \/ 25 kA<\/strong>, <strong>metallic <\/strong>explosion-proof enclosures with <strong>THREADED<\/strong> lids and with <strong>INDIRECT<\/strong> <strong>inputs<\/strong> must be used.<\/p>\n<p>However, the utilization of equipment incorporating the concepts of combined protection by increased safety <strong>Ex &#8220;eb&#8221;<\/strong> with spark-gap devices (such as command switches, circuit breakers, control switches, power switches and contactors) individually certified <strong>as components<\/strong> with Ex &#8220;db&#8221; &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; <strong>plastic<\/strong> enclosures (marking of the individual components <strong>Ex db eb IIC Gb U<\/strong>), may be considered as a suitable option with simplified requirements for installation, inspection and maintenance in hazardous areas compared to <em>&#8220;traditional&#8221;<\/em> metal <em>&#8220;explosion-proof&#8221;<\/em> type enclosures with flat gaskets fixed by bolts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2552 \" src=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2-300x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"521\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2-300x257.png 300w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2-768x658.png 768w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2-600x514.png 600w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2-64x55.png 64w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/imagem-artigo-blinda_2.png 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Example of &#8220;Ex&#8221; local control button installation showing internally <strong>sparkling components<\/strong> (electrical contacts) of the &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; (Ex &#8220;db&#8221;) type, individually certified (Suffix &#8220;U&#8221;) in <em>plastic <\/em>enclosure and &#8220;increased safety&#8221; (Ex &#8220;eb&#8221;) terminals. Marking of the complete device: <strong>Ex db eb IIC T6 Gb IP 66 \/ Ex tb IIIC T80\u00baC Db IP 66<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DIRECT<\/strong><strong> cable entries into metal &#8220;explosion-proof&#8221; type enclosures (Ex. &#8220;d&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Direct<\/strong> cable entries into Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures by means of Ex &#8220;d&#8221; cable glands or by means of Ex &#8220;d&#8221; sealing units may show &#8220;deviations&#8221; or field installation difficulties, as for example improper installation of <strong>non &#8220;Ex&#8221; certified<\/strong> cable glands or Ex &#8220;e&#8221; certified cable glands made of plastic material or else sealing units which are not properly sealed or for which improper installations of <strong>non Ex &#8220;d&#8221; certified<\/strong> conduit fittings are made between the sealing units and the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; metal enclosures, as for example unmarked Ex &#8220;d&#8221; plugs and male\/female couplings.<\/p>\n<p>From a practical perspective, based on results of inspections carried out on equipment installed in classified areas it can be verified that a <strong>significant<\/strong> part of Ex &#8220;d&#8221; sealing units aren&#8217;t sealed <strong>at all<\/strong>, remaining totally <strong>empty<\/strong>, or are <strong>improperly sealed<\/strong>, without following the manufacturers&#8217; recommendations. It may also be verified the existence of an Ex &#8220;d&#8221; sealing unit improperly installed in an incorrect position, with connection to the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; enclosure by means of a &#8220;stretch of conduit&#8221;, not meeting the requirement of <strong><em>&#8220;shortest possible distance&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> to the Ex &#8220;d&#8221; enclosure indicated in the Brazilian Technical Standard adopted ABNT NBR IEC 60079-14.<\/p>\n<p>In the following illustrations are shown other &#8220;examples&#8221; of &#8220;Ex&#8221; equipment installations which have used the method of <strong>direct<\/strong> power and control cable entries into the interior of &#8220;Ex&#8221;
