suitable for installation in hazardous areas with the presence of combustible dusts <strong>Zone 20, Zone 21, or Zone 22<\/strong>, depending on the EPL provided by the \u201cEx\u201d certified equipment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEx\u201d instrumentation, automation, telecommunications, or electrical equipment with <strong>type of protection Ex \u201ct\u201d<\/strong> (<em>Equipment dust ignition protection by enclosure \u201ct\u201d<\/em>), such as local control buttons, electrical or automation panels, luminaires, junction boxes, sensors, transmitters, and positioners instruments, electrical motors, power outlets, Wi-Fi routers, and optical switches, are installed in hazardous areas containing combustible dust.<\/p>\n<p>The application of equipment with type of <strong>protection<\/strong> <strong>Ex \u201ct\u201d<\/strong> is required in installations that have classified areas due to the risk of the presence of explosive atmospheres of combustible dust (<strong>Group III<\/strong>) <strong>Zone 20, Zone 21, or Zone 22,<\/strong> present in the form of <strong>cloud<\/strong> or <strong>layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of classified areas in Group III:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grain, meal, and fertilizer storage silos in port terminals<\/li>\n<li>Oil refineries with the presence of petroleum coke and sulfur<\/li>\n<li>Sugar and alcohol industries, in sugar and methanol refineries<\/li>\n<li>Fertilizer industries<\/li>\n<li>Pharmaceutical industries<\/li>\n<li>Underground coal mines<\/li>\n<li>Weaving industries<\/li>\n<li>Grain storage, handling, and processing facilities<\/li>\n<li>Food industries<\/li>\n<li>Furniture and wood processing industries<\/li>\n<li>Light metal areas where metal dust and particulate material may be \u201ct\u201d shall also be installed in petroleum refineries, in processing units with the presence of petroleum coke or flaked sulfur, and in nitrogen fertilizer production or storage sites.<\/p>\n<p>Equipment with type of protection Ex \u201ct\u201d are characterized by having a <strong>minimum degree of protection (IP Code)<\/strong>, in accordance with the Brazilian adopted Technical Standards <strong>ABNT NBR IEC 60529<\/strong> (<em>Degrees of protection provided by enclosures<\/em>) or <strong>ABNT NBR IEC 60034-5<\/strong> (Degrees of protection provided by the integral design ofr rotating electrical machines \u2013 IP Code classification), published by ABNT (<em>Brazilian Association of Technical Standards<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>These degrees of protection indicate that the Ex \u201ct\u201d electrical equipment&#8217;s enclosure has suitable O-rings, gaskets, or seals, made of materials resistant to cold and heat, so as to prevent the ingress of <strong>dust<\/strong> that may be present at the installation site into the interior of the enclosure, avoiding the risks of low insulation or leakage currents in electrical components.<\/p>\n<p>The degree of protection to be provided by Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment against ingress of dust into it, such as <strong>IP55<\/strong> or <strong>IP66<\/strong>, depends on the Combustible Dust <strong>area classification<\/strong> (<strong>Zone<\/strong> <strong>20, Zone 21 or Zone 22<\/strong>) or <strong>Group<\/strong> (Group IIIA, Group IIIB or Group IIIC) indicated in the respective <strong>area<\/strong> <strong>classification<\/strong> documentation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1971 aligncenter\" important characteristic of Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment is that its maximum surface temperature <strong>limitation<\/strong>, so that it is <strong>lower<\/strong> than the ignition temperature of the combustible dust that may be present at the installation site, either in the form of a <strong>layer<\/strong> or in the form of a <strong>cloud.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the presence of combustible dust in the form of a <strong>layer<\/strong>, the maximum surface temperature of Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment shall be limited to <strong>75 \u00baC below<\/strong> the ignition temperature of the combustible dust that may be present. For cases of presence of combustible dust in form of a <strong>cloud<\/strong>, the maximum surface temperature of Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment shall be limited to <strong>2\/3<\/strong> of the ignition temperature of combustible dust present at the installation site.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the level of protection provided by \u201cEx\u201d equipment, referred to as the EPL (<em>Equipment Protection Level<\/em>), the \u201c\u201dtype of protection Ex \u201ct\u201d is divided into three protection levels, based on the risk of the \u201cEx\u201d electrical equipment becoming an undue ignition source in an explosive dust atmosphere. Equipment with Ex \u201ct\u201d dust ignition protection can provide the following levels of protection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Level of protection \u201c<strong>ta<\/strong>\u201d (EPL <strong>Da<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Level of protection \u201c<strong>tb<\/strong>\u201d (EPL <strong>Db<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Level of protection \u201c<strong>tc<\/strong>\u201d (EPL <strong>Dc<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Making a simplified comparison between EPL and \u201cEx\u201d types of protection, for the purpose of installation in explosive atmospheres of combustible dust (<strong>Group III<\/strong>), in a similar way to the current and \u201c<em>traditional<\/em>\u201d definitions indicated in the adopted Brazilian technical standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-14 (<em>Electrical installations design, selection, and erection in explosive atmospheres<\/em>), based on zones (without taking into consideration any additional risk assessment), one has the following selection criteria for equipment EPL with respect to the area classification.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cEx\u201d equipment with EPL Da is suitable for installation in combustible dust hazardous areas Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEx\u201d equipment with EPL Db is suitable for installation in combustible dust hazardous areas Zone 21 and Zone 22<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEx\u201d equipment with EPL Dc is suitable for installation in combustible dust hazardous areas Zone 22 only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1973 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/botoeira-ex.png\" alt=\"Botoeira Ex\" width=\"346\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/botoeira-ex.png 346w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/botoeira-ex-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/blinda.com.br\/novo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/botoeira-ex-64x57.png 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Exemplo de botoeira \u201cEx\u201d para comando local com tipo de prote\u00e7\u00e3o Ex tb IIIC T85\u00baC Db instalada em \u00e1rea classificada contendo poeiras combust\u00edveis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In cases of application in \u201cEx\u201d LED luminaires for Group III hazardous areas, for example, the \u201c\u201dtype of protection Ex \u201ct\u201d is often used in <strong>combination<\/strong> with the Ex \u201cop\u2011is\u201d type of protection (protection of equipment with inherently safe optical transmission), in order to ensure that the optical radiation emitted by the LEDs are of the \u201cdivergent\u201d type and that they do not pose a risk of becoming a source of ignition. In these cases, the \u201cEx\u201d LED luminaires often have an Ex\u00a0op\u2011is tb IIIC T135\u00baC Db marking.<\/p>\n<p>The third edition of the adopted Brazilian Technical Standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-31: Explosive atmospheres &#8211; Part 31: <em>Equipment dust ignition protection by enclosure \u201ct\u201d <\/em>\u201c\u201dwas published by ABNT on 2022\/06\/29.<\/p>\n<p>The third edition of Brazilian adopted Standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-31\/2022 cancels and replaces the previous edition, published by ABNT in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>This adopted Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-31 is applicable to equipment protected by enclosures and with surface temperature limitation for use in combustible dust atmospheres. This standard specifies requirements for the design, construction, and testing of \u201cEx\u201d equipment and \u201cEx\u201d components. That adopted Brazilian Standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of the adopted Brazilian Technical Standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-0 (<em>Explosive Atmospheres &#8211; Part 0: General Requirements<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Among the most significant technical changes in Edition 2022 of adopted Brazilian Technical Standard ABNT NBR IEC 60079-31 (Ex \u201ct\u201d) with respect to the previous edition, published in 2014, the following can be highlighted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment providing level of protection \u201ctb\u201d or \u201ctc\u201d, intended for direct connection to the mains and designed to interrupt a fault current above 10\u00a0kA, shall be duly tested and marked<\/li>\n<li>For Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment providing level of protection \u201cta\u201d which contains a cell or battery, only sealed cells or batteries shall be used<\/li>\n<li>For \u201cEx \u201ct\u201d equipment providing level of protection \u201ctb\u201d or \u201ctc\u201d where there are sparking contacts or hot surfaces, and which contains a cell or battery, only sealed cells or batteries shall be used<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cmalfunction\u201d conditions for determining the temperature class for rotating electrical machines providing level of\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Included<\/span>protection \u201ctb\u201d controlled by a converter<\/li>\n<li>Included new \u201cnormative\u201d annex for cable entry devices with \u201c\u201dtype of protection Ex \u201ct\u201d, including cable glands, cable entry devices, conduit sealing devices, sealing elements and threaded adapters<\/li>\n<li>The thermal tests for Ex \u201ct\u201d equipment were relocated to the adopted Brazilian Technical Standard
